2008 Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival

Guandu Nature Park announces that the 2008 Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival will take place at Guandu Nature Park in Taipei, Taiwan, from April 19 to September 14, 2008. Guandu Nature Park is located in the Beitou area of Taipei City and is about a 10-minute walk from the Guandu MRT Station. Guandu Nature Park, managed by the Wild Bird Society of Taipei, is an urban wetlands area and nature park open to the public from 9AM to 5PM each day. The Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival in 2008 is supported by the Taipei City Government Department of Culture Affairs, the Council for Cultural Affairs and other sponsors.

The 2008 Festival will feature sculpture installations by 8 international artists that focus on the environment and the problem of global warming. 2008 marks the third year of the annual environmental art festival at Guandu Nature Park. The exhibition is curated by American artist and former Fulbright Scholar Jane Ingram Allen who has been living and working in Taiwan since 2004. This year Jane received over 165 entries from artists all over the world. Jane reviewed and selected the finalists working with the staff of Guandu Nature Park. Artists selected to come to Guandu Nature Park to create their works in 2008 are as follows:
Donald Buglass ? New Zealand
Istvan Eross ? Hungary
Francois Frechet ? France
Firman Djamil ? Indonesia
Kaoru Motomiya ? Japan
Roger Tibon ? Philippines
Aihua Hsia ? Taiwan
Chung-ho Cheng and Chia-ping Lu ? Taiwan

The artists will all be at Guandu Nature Park creating their works on site from April 7 through Aril 18. The artists will use natural materials and earth-friendly techniques, and will work with volunteers and the staff at Guandu Nature Park to finish their works for the April 19 opening. Each artist is creating a unique sculpture installation about some aspect of the problem of global warming from the perspective of their own country and culture. Artists with their vivid imaginations and ingenuous creations can help to raise awareness about environmental problems and lead us in thinking about creative solutions to universal problems such as global warming.

There will be hands-on activities for the public with the artists on both Saturday, April 19 and Sunday April 20, 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Activities are planned for families and people of all ages. The public is invited to come see the sculptures, meet the artists and create some environmental art themselves with the artists on these two afternoons.

The outdoor sculpture exhibition will be on display at Guandu Nature Park through September 14, 2008. Many public programs for families and the public will be held during the six months of the exhibition. Family-oriented hands-on ?do it yourself? activities are being planned for each weekend during the coming months.
