FIFTY YEARS OF ART IN THE PUBLIC SPACE (VITRY-SUR-SEINE, FRANCE)
Located on the outskirts of Paris, Vitry-sur-Seine, a city of 85 000 inhabitants, has committed itself, since the early sixties, to an audacious policy of commissioning artworks for urban settings. The city council has demonstrated an exceptional consistency, continuity and longevity in this domain by maintaining on course a long term vision about the role of art within the city-- the main component of its cultural, social and urban development.

As a whole, this policy has born its fruits. The city now numbers some 130 works being offered on view to the wandering stroller or the city dweller in a great variety of public and collective spaces. This collection of public art works is one the most important in France. Several generations of artists have contributed to it.
