Highrise - Common Ground. Art and the Amsterdam Zuidas Area is a kaleidoscopic publication that examines the role of art in public space and its possible significance. The book questions the relationship of urban planning, art and design with the public domain, exemplified by the recent developments in the Zuidas Area in Amsterdam.
In the Amsterdam Zuidas Area, a new city centre is emerging with offices, residential areas and cultural facilities. The developments of the Zuidas are characterized by high ambitions and an exceptional decision-making process. Highrise ? Common Ground critically reflects on the crucial issues that come to light when applying art in this particular context.
In this publication, prominent artists and theoreticians contemplate the role of art in the public domain. The Zuidas is explored, intersected, evaluated and uncovered in order to assess the possibilities for culture at large and visual art in particular, in a large-scale urban project like the Zuidas. The result is a collection of incisive theoretical and artistic observations that shed new light on notions of the contemporary public domain.
The Research Group Art and Public Space stimulates research and theoretical reflection on the role of art in the public domain. For additional information on other projects of the Research Group Art and Public Space, please visit our website www.lkpr.nl
